April.

My writing has been going well for the last couple of days. The idea is there and it’s a rush to get it on the screen. A couple more days and it’ll be finished. I’ve even got quite a bit of editing done, but that will be a priority after the story.

Disney/Pixar announced Finding Dory today. Finding Nemo 2 has been rumoured since last summer, but this is the first time Disney/Pixar have acknowledged it. It’s set for a November 2015 release. If the rumours for Toy Story 4, also in 2015, turn out to be true then 2015 will be the year of Disney. Star Wars 7, Avengers 2, An unknown Marvel project (Probably Ant-Man), Pirates 5, Finding Dory, Toy Story 4. I think Disney have the top 5/6 of the biggest box office grossing films there.  There is also going to be the 55th Disney classic that year, and they always make a bit of noise. Although judging from Wreck-It Ralph the UK will get that a bit later.

I’m going to see The Host tomorrow. It should be good. The book is brilliant. It’s written by Stephanie Meyer, and I think it’s better than Twilight. The film’s trailers look good, so I have high hopes.

I’ve only read about 30 more pages of Harlen Coben’s book. I’m enjoying it, but writing has been a priority. I’ve also been playing Sly 4 with my girlfiend, Tabby, which has been fun. It’s about time a game was released for this generation of consoles with a decent length (Not being able to get to completion within a couple of sessions. Tomb Raider was about 12 hours, Bioshock Infinite was about 10. Not worth the money, but I use Lovefilm.) The game is also exactly like the ps2 ones. Fun, simple and entertaining. No long, and boring, cut scenes. No annoying real time events that take too long and are to easy. (Pressing buttons when they appear on screen is just boring.) It’s a good game, and I hope it is successful enough to end this long parade of first person shooters that seem to be everywhere at the moment. Even Resident Evil 6 had really Call of Duty moments when you had to shoot a sniper so someone else could do something. Hopefully that’s the end of that.

Today

I’ve finally started writing something that isn’t related to uni. I haven’t carried on with my second novel, which is still at the half way point. Instead I was inspired to revisit something I started nearly 4 years ago.

When my dad first got a laptop, in May 2009, he asked if I wanted to go on it. So I did, but there wasn’t much to do. We had no internet, no games that were worth playing and I had no homework to do. I decided to open up Microsoft office and start writing. I wrote quickly and had about 750 words in an hour. I saved it and went to bed.

About half an hour later my dad woke me up. My brother was at our mum’s house so he wasn’t disturbed. He asked me if I wrote what what was on the laptop. I said that I had. He was genuinely shocked and asked me if he could show it to other people. One of my uncles, my mum and some of my dad’s friends all read the small extract and seemed to like it. It was the first time I’d ever felt inspired to carry on writing.

At this point I had written 12000 words called The Demon Lord. Which is still no where near finished. I do intend to look over that at some point soon. I carried on with this new story and got to the 10000 word point before slowly grinding to a halt. I knew the ending and yet didn’t know how to get there.

Skip to yesterday. I was in a bad mood. I didn’t want to shout at anyone so I wrote a poem and posted it on hello poetry. (Stupid, I know) That didn’t work. I lay in bed for a while at night which is when this abandoned story came to my mind. I suddenly knew the middle. I haven’t thought about this piece since I started uni but there, at 2 in the morning, I knew how to carry it on. I mulled the idea in my head for most of today before sitting down and opening the file. August 2010 was the last time it was touched.

I’ve decided to write 1000 words a day and have it finished in 10 days. It’s a short story, but I think it’s going to be a good one. It’s amazing that one day of freedom helps me solve a 4 year old problem. I wrote those 1000 words pretty slowly over 2 listens to a Paramore album. I look forward to the next 1000 tomorrow.

John Lennon

It all started with one word, Yes. Tiny little letters on a black canvas suspended from the ceiling. John Lennon, climbed up a ladder in an art gallery and picked up a small magnifying glass and saw the most positive word he’d seen in a while. Up until that point everything was beginning to unravel.

* * *

Click HERE to carry on reading The Road to Revolution, my non-fiction piece for uni. I’m pretty happy with it and think I’ll pass. It was a little rushed towards the end because of time constraints but it should read okay.

Doctor Who is finally back and on top form. Lots of pressure this year for high quality and judging from that episode it isn’t going to disappoint. It’s also been confirmed that David Tennant and Billie Piper are going to be staring in the 50th anniversary special which is good news.

100 pages into Stay Close, Harlan Coben’s latest thriller. As always it’s pretty good. Not as good as Tell No One or my personal favourites the Mickey Boltiar series.

Finished

Just finished my American essay. Actually finished about half an hour ago. This may be a bad post. And you might want to skip it. Just slowly getting ready for bed and reflecting on the last year at uni. This year I read exactly 29 books for 4 English Modules. That’s not including the mass amount of poetry and short stories I had to read as well. And The Waste Land is not an easy read. In 5 months that’s a lot. It’s more than one a week and when they’re books like The Mysteries of Udolpho (About 700 pages) and Tristram Shandy (About  750 pages. I’ll admit I gave up after 150) It’s a lot of reading. Especially with the ammount of garbage on the modules. I didn’t mind some of the books, though.

I loved all of the Gothic books. Udolpho, Dracula (Obviously), Jeckyll and Hyde, Northanger Abbey, Carmilla, Baskervilles, Otranto. They all stand out as brilliant books. I’m glad I chose that module and can’t say a bad thing about any of them.

American I liked the first two books, The Bell Jar and On The Road. New York Trilogy was alright, but other than that they were awful.

For 18th Century. I thought Aphra Behn’s The Rover was good, even funny in places. Guliver’s Travels was alright.

For Modernism I thought Voyage of the Dark was pretty good, and I liked Kathrine Mansfield’s short stories. The Waste land is alright after about going through it about five times and screaming at the paper every other time. We do this thing in that class were the lecturer goes round and asks us what we thought about each text. I was honest and said I’d read it and couldn’t make any sense of it. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one, and he helped me understand it, but it’s still… um… weird. I can’t describe it.

Now I have to have a little rant. Because some of these books should have been forgotten when they were written and no one should be forced to read them. Firstly The Way of the World by William Congreve. I hated this play. words cannot describe how much I hated this play. When I was speaking to others about I was told I don’t have to enjoy it but just appreciate it. I cannot appreciate this play. I hate it. It was the worst thing I’d ever read and that was week 2 of my 2nd year. Next comes What Maisie Knew by Henry James. One of the hardest books I’ve ever read. It’s up there with way of the world. I wanted to rip it in half. I wasn’t the only one who hated it. Tristram Shandy because I was really looking forward to this book but it was tedious and boring. And then the teacher told me “But that’s the point.”

I sincerely apologise to anyone who has read this far. I didn’t start this to moan about uni, it just turned out like that. I still have that feeling back from week 2/3 when I read The Way of the World and What Maisie Knew and it is horrible. I needed to write this just to reflect and get my thoughts down. I hate it when I haven’t finished an essay before 11pm. I stay awake for ages after that not being able to shut down. I’m listening to To Sheila by The Smashing Pumpkins. It’s one in the morning. I’m wide awake.

The creative writing side of uni this year was also half/half. Non-Fiction was unengaging and unrewarding. There was never any good feedback and the weeks got more pointless as they went on. I stayed once for 1 and a half hours after I could go home to get some personal feedback. I handed her my short piece and said it’s too short and I need help extending it. She read it nodded handed it back and said it needed extending. I said I know can you help. She said it’s got a good tone, keep it up. I know I’m at uni now but I think anyone could have told me that. I knew it needed extending. I didn’t need someone to agree with me.

Fiction was a highlight of this year. Apart from his overmentioning of his own books the teacher was very passionate about writing and his feedback was helpful. Every week I felt like I learnt something. It was a very good module.

I’m really sorry for the amount of waffling I’ve done today, and I know it’s not really relevant to my writing or young adult, horror or fantasy books but I needed to write it. I’m going to go and watch a talk from Stephen King from last year. He’s a brilliant author and a great speaker. I watched a talk he did last December on youtube a couple of nights ago about where he gets his ideas from. It was interesting.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley.

Busy.

It’s been a busy week. Lots of work. 1 Portfolio and 2 presentations. This time last week I had barely started any of them and now they’re all finished. Quite happy with the portfolio. Was a lot harder to write the biography on John Lennon that I’d previously thought. Originally I was going to write about Sylvia Plath, but then every week the teacher seemed to be referencing her and at one point said it would be difficult to write about her and make it sound original. I didn’t want to start from scratch so I chose someone I already knew a bit about. I got it done. That’s all I really care about.

The presentations went much better than expected. It got to a point when I just wanted them over and I didn’t think about them. The first one was fine, the second was a bit wobbly in places, but I don’t care now. As long as I’ve passed.

Sad news that My Chemical Romance broke up last Saturday. After a year of promising a new album and then releasing songs recorded a couple years back, I was expecting big things this year. Hopefully some good solo stuff, or some bad solo stuff and then a reunion. Which brings me to Fall Out Boy. The two singles from their comeback album sound good. Different to what they used to do, but that’s a good thing.

Got an essay to write for Friday. It’s about the language in the New York Trilogy and American Psycho. It sounds great. Out of the 10 questions given it’s the only one that I can think of one point for. And I can really only think of 2. It’s going to be a long haul. 2 essays, 1 portfolio and 2 exams to go. In less than a month it’ll be other. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
