Things I Learnt While Writing My First Novel

I feel like I have to write this post, for myself at least. I hope you find it interesting, and if you don’t you have my permission to stop reading. I learnt quite a bit while writing my novel. I’m going to try and list those that I think are important.

  • A regular writing habit was incredibly helpful. I was writing 1000 words a day, at near enough the same time every day. After I reached about half way through it was taking me about half an hour/ 40 minutes to get my 1000 words. I never ran out of ideas.
  • It helps to stop writing when I have ideas. If I wrote til I didn’t know what to write next, when I came back, it was hard to carry on. Once I had forced myself to stop with ideas left I carried on writing at a fast pace the next day.
  • Characters names are very easy to confuse and forget, which is the mark of a good writer. It also makes rereading painful.
  • I find plotting ahead useless. Near enough everything I had planned couldn’t happen by the time I got to that point for one reason or another.
  • Music really helps. I listened to Slash’s album, Apocalyptic Love, every time I started writing and was usually finished before the album finished. I still can’t listen to songs of that album without thinking of my book. It really helps me get back into the mood of writing. I don’t have a specific album for my new one, but Audio Secrecy by Stone Sour seems to be the lead candidate. I also had a playlist of random songs for editing that helped, but those songs are now associated with frustration and anger.
  • Editing is really really annoying (I already knew this. But I learnt it again and again.)
  • No matter how many hours, days and weeks I spent editing it was never finished. I just had to get it to a suitable level before the deadline. There are 2 errors in the print edition where there is no space between words. Someone else has pointed out other errors that are really unnoticeable but they were looking for them. (What a good advert for my book) I could have spent another year going over the book and it would never have been perfect. I also read a self-published book that has an error in the first line and several in the first paragraph so I know mine isn’t that bad. That same book also has a lot of very good reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.
  • Making sure the cover fits and there is enough bleed takes a lot longer than I thought it would. My cover was rejected 7 days in a row. That was very annoying.

There are a few things I learnt while writing my first book. I’m sure I learnt more but I can’t remember them at the moment, which is useful.

Tomorrow’s post will be my thank yous to the people who helped along the way. This may be two posts, I’m not quite sure.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

Part 10

In the last post I mentioned that I would be uploading part 10 of Jimmy. You can read it HERE

You can also start from part 1 HERE

Anyone who reads it, I would appreciate it if you left feedback of some kind.

Thanks in advance.

It’s a strange process. Writing something in installments, knowing that people are already reading and judging the beginning of the story before I even know what the ending will be. It’s strange and yet exciting. I don’t know if I would write another story like this. The only reason I decided to upload it weekly was because I hadn’t uploaded a short story in a long time. I suppose it depends on how you all like the story as a whole.

I’m also going to be releasing Jimmy along with a few short stories and a nearly finished story that is nearly half the size of a novel in print format. I’ve mentioned the new story once or twice before, but was unsure how to share it. I am very nervous about reading it as some parts are very personal. I don’t want to upload it on here for that reason. Which is stupid, I know, but it’s my website. So there. It might be useful to know the title. It’s called Useless. Stay tuned to find out more in the upcoming weeks.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

It’s Over

I’ve finished writing Jimmy now. All 15 parts have been written and are now waiting for me to reread them and edit them. It’s 49 pages of A4 double spaced, times new roman 12. It’s longer than i was expecting. As I was writing the final lines I began to think about how this project started. I was inspired by The Postman Always Rings Twice, which sounds stupid when I look at how the story turned out. I’m quite happy with it. I’m going to reread the whole thing over the weekend and see how things need to be changed.

I will be uploading part 10 soon. I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve been feeling quite nostalgic about games in the last couple of weeks, which was only increased after I watched every video Did You Know Gaming have uploaded to youtube. Most of their videos revolve around much loved Nintendo franchises. I now need to play the old Zeldas again. Ocarina of Time will be my next mission. I also played, until 2 in the morning, Crash Bandicoot last Friday with my girlfriend and another friend. That game is nearly 20 years old and is funner and more addictive than most stuff that is produced today.

As a warning in the next couple of days I’m going to be writing a few posts about writing my novel, and thanks to a few people who helped along the way. I hope you find them interesting.

My tasks for the following week is to finish A Funny Thing Happened on the way to Heaven by Corey Taylor, start Ocarina of Time, and write 7000 words of the To The Other sequel.

I’ll see you all next week.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

Part Nine

You can read Part Nine of Jimmy HERE

You can also catch up from part one HERE and use the drop down menu at the top to find the others.

I’m halfway through part 12 now. It’s been a weird experience writing this. I know that people are reading it and catching up to where I am, and I still haven’t finalised the ending. I hope you are enjoying it.

I should be writing part 13 tomorrow, 14 Thursday and then the final part on Friday. After that I’m going to get on with the currently untitled sequel to To The Other. I’m thinking about a similar name. Join The Other, perhaps. Or it might be something completely different like Beyond The Fringe. That sounds familiar. I just googled it and now know why it sounded familiar. Not good. Something else then. Maybe just Beyond. Another. The Next Step. The Last Step. One More Step. Avoid the Other. Help The Other. Hopefully something better will come up before I finish. Title for the first book was originally Fragmented Nights. But I wanted it to be clear that it was part of a sequel so changed it to To The Other and used Fragmented at the title of the series.

Enough with that. I hate giving things titles. In my first year of uni for my poetry module I was told to write a poem about my dad. So after a week of worrying about it, I named it “Dad” and it was the only time I was told I had a good title. It’s a problem for future Ashley now.

I finished Neil Gaiman’s new book recently. The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It was pretty good. Well written. Very good characters. Quite short. But it was a little thin. It reminded me of Coraline, plot-wise, just not as scary. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who has never read Gaiman before. Try Stardust, American Gods or Coraline. But I’m sure someone who has read his other books would enjoy it. I would give it around 7/10.

Now to read Corey Taylor’s new book.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

I forgot – Goodreads

I forgot to mention in my last post that my book, To The Other, is now on Goodreads. See for yourself HERE

What an interesting post.

I saw Hansel and Gretel last weekend. I was disappointed with it, but it was okay. A solid 6/10. May skip the sequel. I also watched Paranormal Activity 4. Which was better than 3. I enjoy those films more than a lot of people I know.

It’s also 50 years to the day (July 1st) since The Beatles recorded She Loves You. A nice random fact.

I will writer a longer and more interesting post tomorrow. I hope.

See you then,

Ashley
