Zom-B: Baby – Review

Title: Zom-B Baby

Author: Darren Shan

Rating:

Finally the fourth book is here. Each book in this series just makes me sure it’s one of the best out there. I’ve read a lot of children books, especially horror and fantasy and I don’t think I’ve ever seen such adult themes like racism, religion, blind faith and friendship dealt with so well.

Zom-B Baby is the 5th book in the Zom-B series that deals with B’s journeys as a zombie. After the shocking revelation at the end of the last book, B has a lot to think about. Someone who has offered her a new way of living, some kind of security, a chance to start again. But this person also believes they have spoken to God in a way. B isn’t sure whether to just ignore this or leave the security of the new group.

A familiar face returns during the middle section of the book and gives a nice change of pace to the book. All of the characters in the book are really well crafted and believable. They really do set it apart from other zombie stories out there.

This book didn’t have as much of a focus on gruesome description as the previous books did, which isn’t a bad thing. There are still few moments of terror, but nothing compared to the other books.

As always the ending is amazing. And again I cannot wait for the next book. While I’m not sure what exactly is going on in the bigger picture something is and I have a feeling it’s going to be amazing.

I think everyone should give this series a go. It’s well written, has a fast pace, some very good characters. The first one in particular is one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

Too Long

It’s been quite a while since my last post. I’ve been feeling ill, and uni work got in the way. I’ve had two mini-presentations to do. They’re not really presentations just introducing a poem and talking about the poet and main features of the poem. I think of them and prepare for them as presentations because I know the real ones are going to be here before I know it. One of the introductions was on Song (I’m going to New York) by Frank O’Hara and the other was To The Snipe by John Clare. I hadn’t heard of either of these poems before, but enjoyed both of them. Although I read a few other John Clare ones and preferred them, especially I Am.

I’ve also shown work at a workshop session that went reasonably well. The comments were not too positive, but I was expecting that to be honest. So far the two pieces I’ve written to uni have been too forced just to get them finished in time.

I also found out that I cannot write Fantasy for my dissertation which means the 4000 words I wrote over the summer and all the planning to go with it is now practically useless. I have a Dissertation meeting thingy tomorrow and hope that I will be told I can write fantasy, but somehow I doubt it.

I watched the first episode of Agents of SHIELD the other week and really enjoyed it. Still haven’t watched the second one though. I also need to watch the second episode of Atlantis. I enjoyed the first one of that as well.

I’ve been playing through the Metal Gear Solid series again at the moment. I haven’t played the original two games before, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed them. They’re dated but once I got into them I really liked them. I’m just over half way through MGS2 at the moment.

I haven’t watched any films for quite a while. I just haven’t felt like sitting in one place for a long period of time and focus on something. I haven’t even been watching that much tv. I suppose it’s just readjusting to uni.

The new Darren Shan book, Zom B Baby, came out last week. It took me the longest to read out of the whole series, but that was just because I was ill. It’s hard to say but i think it may be the best book in the series so far. The events towards the end were really shocking and yet again I can’t wait for the next one. I will post a proper review soon. At the moment I’m reading Doctor Sleep by Stephen King. I’m not very far through it, but I will read more soon. After that I’m going to read Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman about the time travelling dinosaur Professor Steg. I also have to finish The Water Babies at some point.

Writing has been slow recently. Hopefully all will be back to normal soon.

The end of Jimmy and the start of uni

The Final part of Jimmy has no been uploaded. You can read it HERE. Thank you to everyone who has read it. I hope you enjoy the ending.

This week was the start of my third and final year of university. I’ve had two modules so far, with two left to start. So far it’s been going alright. I’m still waiting for my Victorian Fantasy module, which I think will be my favourite this year.

I’ve also gotten through some trouble I’ve had with my writing. I wasn’t sure how to progress the story in To The Other’s sequel, but now I’m through it and will soon have finished the book.

Not much else to say this week.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

Jimmy Part 14 and uni.

Jimmy part 14 has now been uploaded and can be read HERE. The last part will be uploaded next week, either on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Uni is approaching fast. While I set out to be over prepared and ready for my final year, now that it’s only the weekend away I know I’m not. I’ve read a couple of the set texts, but not all of them, I’m just under halfway through my dissertation, while I had hoped I would have finished it by now. I don’t even know how to prepare for Creative Writing and Reading 3, and I couldn’t name one poem from the romantic period. All things which will change by Christmas, hopefully.

I do have a couple of aims this year. Since I’ve only got 1 heavy reading module I plan on reading every text and not skipping the mind numbing boring ones, like I did more than a few times last year. At the time I did have 4 heavy reading modules and just read ones that I could get in to.

I want to feel more confident about reading out loud. I know I’m still going to get nervous, but I want to get through at least a couple of weeks without worrying about the next workshop night and day. I have 2 modules with workshops in, which is the same as last year. I know I’m not going to get along with Creative Reading and Writing, just by reading the module guide. But my focus is more aimed at Fiction 3. But as I haven’t been enrolled in that module yet I still don’t have a clue about it.

I also hope I enjoy the books more this year. Since I’m doing the Victorian fantasy module this shouldn’t be a problem. So far I’ve read The Jungle Book and The King of the Golden River and really enjoyed the books. I’m 5% through The Water Babies and finding it interesting so far.

A big aim this year is to get the assignments done as quickly as possible, while last year I did some of them with a week to spare, there were a couple of times when I was looking at the clock, seeing 11pm and thinking I’ve still got 500 words to go. I want to feel more comfortable with my timings this year.

Enough about uni. This week I haven’t done much that isn’t related to uni. I’ve started Kingdom Hearts 1.5 which is the re-release of the original kingdom hearts from 11 years ago along with RE: Chain of Memories and the cut scenes from 358/2 days. One of my favourite games of all time. I love anything to do with Disney. Can’t wait for the next one. I’m hoping for Toy Story world, Bugs Life world, The Incredibles world and a Tangled world. A Star Wars one would be nice as well, but doubtful.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley
