New Story

It’s just turbulence. Not that bad. Seen it plenty of times before. You know how it works. Air pockets and things. Come on. It’ll be alright. How many times do you hear about a plane going down. Almost never. Not going to happen today. You know that. Just keep it together. Okay then, close your eyes. Keep them closed. No one is looking. It’s alright. No one will think it’s weird that a thirty year old is clinging to the seat with scrunched up eyes. I must look stupid. Can’t think about that now. It’s okay it’ll be over soon.

The Same thoughts keep on going round and round in my head. It never works. No matter how many times I’ve been on a plane, it never works. Smooths out in the air and my hands unclasp the seat. An old woman across the isle smiles at me. That bitch was watching me. Should get up and punch her in the face. Last person she watches.

Plane lurches. Loud crunching sound. The window next to me bursts. Things flying everywhere. The boy a seat back lets go of the bunny it flies out of his window. So glad I had my belt on the entire flight. Eyes scrunched again. Screaming all around. Please. Just. Stop. This isn’t real. It isn’t real. Can’t be. Come on, Mary. We’ll get through this. They’ll do an emergency landing. Just like in the films.

Eyes open. Bag in front of me. Oxygen. Waited to long to grab it. Head’s already light. Just a little more. Got it. Immediately turn around to see if the boy’s alright. He’s got the mask on, sobbing into his dad’s chest. Mask as well, but a massive lump of his head’s been scrapped off from something falling on it. He’s barely awake. Where’s Chip. He’s been in the bathroom for too long. Do they have seat belts in there.

The air pressure levels out and things calm down a little. The old lady, is crying. Harder than I was. Another lurch. Something hits me. Down, out cold.

I awake in a metal room. Nothing like the plane. I’m laying on a bed, on top of a white sheet and under a white quilt. My head has been placed upon a white pillow. I sense a theme here. My hands reach the top of my head. Somebody’s put a bandage on it. I sit up. The walls and ceiling are completely metal. The bed runs the length of the room on the right hand side, with a table to the left of me. There is a door opposite the table.

The second I sit up, I’m dizzy. Barely aware of who I am. I’ve never even seen a room like this before. It’s just weird. There’s a loud clank and then the door swings towards me. A man walks in.

“You’re finally awake then.”

Yesterday I wrote about doing a story spread out into 500 word segments. Today, I just went for it. 13 minutes in total to write and now it’s on here. I had no idea, just wrote one word after the other until it started to form. The next part will be here on Thursday. Let me know what you think of the first part. It has no title yet, but hopefully I’ll think of one soon.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

A New Start

I want to start doing new things on this blog. I have a few ideas, but would love to hear your suggestions. Leave a comment on this page, or email me on the contact me page to do so.

One of my ideas is to start reviewing more books regularly. I read any book I can get my hands on and it’s one of the reasons I love my kindle. The only problem is time constraints. If you have any books you would like reviewing get in touch and I will try to prioritise.

Another idea is to start and ongoing story that I update multiple times a week. 500 words every other day. I would have no idea what is going to happen next, just sit down, write and publish.

I’ve been thinking about doing posts about my influences. From other books, music, films, tv and games. Sharing some of these maybe a good idea.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I’m a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to reviews. I tend to ignore them, although I do read some. I tend to go for reading multiple reviews from somewhere like Amazon or personal blogs, rather than big websites and magazines. I would much rather make my own mind up. I do, however, love writing them. It’s on of my favourite things to write. Just thought I would share that.

I was going to upload a story today (Feb’s short story) but I chose not to, because it was a lot angrier than I thought it would be. It’s personal and I don’t want to share it. I will post it on here at  some point, but just not quite yet. I am going to be posting next week a story I wrote today for uni.

Here’s the first couple of paragraphs:

It’s true, you know. That old cliché. The one about barmen being the new therapist. The word new, that’s what gets people. The new therapist. We’ve been here longer than they have, you know that. It’s an old cliché that doesn’t quite make sense. Anyone can tell you that.

You know. The first time you walked into the pub, all those years ago, I actually thought you knew. My heart stopped. Honestly thought I was going to keel over there and then. Didn’t though. You walked over, sat down, ordered a pint. Pint of what, though. Can’t remember. I probably got it wrong then anyway. I’d seen your face not ten minutes before. On the news. Telling the people that you had leads, or something like that. You walked in and I nearly died. Thought about running, for just that half a second. Wouldn’t have worked though, would it. We both know your faster than me.

In University today I got a little bored and then sidetracked. Started thinking of how many assignments I had to hand in. Fiction is the one that skipped my mind completely. I started with a theme. Time. That led to an image of people meeting. That led to the line “It’s true, you know.” I went home, had some lunch and thought I’m going to write this down. 1600 words later and it’s finished. Pretty happy with how it went, and will upload the rest this time next week.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley

Scuttles – Part 2

It’s a few hours late, but I spent a day without my laptop after leaving my charger at my dad’s house so it all worked out alright. HERE it is. Dear Scuttles – Part 2. Enjoy. I hope you enjoy.

This week has been full of delays, but I’m managing to work around them. Hopefully next week will be more productive.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley.

Scuttles Part 2 incoming

I had originally planed the second part of Dear Scuttles to be uploaded last week at around 1500 words. It will be uploaded on Friday and is currently 3000 words. I need to go over it a couple of times, but I’m pretty happy with it so far. You can read the first part HERE. I wasn’t sure how people would react to the story, I was unsure but thought it’s better to upload it than leave it. However I’ve received great feedback. I appreciate it all.

I’m reaching the final stretch of The Fragmented Sequence book 2, should be finished by the end of next week. After that it’s editing on The Man Out of Place. Looking forward to that, sure I’ll change my mind when the time comes. Trying not to look to far into the future with writing, but I have loads of things lined up.

Uni is coming to an end. Just a few weeks to go. This is week 4 and week 12 is the final week, but by that point most of the lectures have dried up with tutorials in their place. Some exam prep, but since I only have 1 exam this year not much. I figured out the other day that I have 1 essay and 1 exam left. I also have the dissertation and 2 portfolios as well as a single  presentation left. It’s not much left. I’ll be glad when it’s over for about five minutes before I start panicking about everything else.

I finished The Old Man and the Sea, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Very gripping despite not much actually happening. I’m onto The Sun Also Rises. I’m making progress on it, but not that far through at the moment. To early to tell if I like it at any rate.

Thanks for reading,

Ashley
